How do you Stop Biting Your Nails?

Preparation is Important

I think we all get to the stage where we have had enough and just want to quit. However we just need to do some preparation first. So making a list of the following is going to be very important. Have a clear understanding of yourself and the habits or emotional events when you bite your nails. This is very important so we can address these before we get started.
1. What are your reasons for want to stop biting your nails? Since you have gone through all the videos and the information, I am sure you can make up a very impressive list.
2. What are the benefits of stop being a nail biter? If you feel a bit lost here, then go back on previous Steps and come up with the most inspiring benefits to you . At first you may say you will have beautiful nails and that is good. Of course this is important, yet I am sure there are so many more eg embarrassment.
3. What are your triggers? When do you find yourself biting your nails? Spend the next 24 hours and check out the times and/or events when you tend to find your finger in you mouth.
4. What can you do instead of biting your nails? With each of these triggers make a list of what you can do instead of biting your nails. We are all different, live different lives, have different activities or occupations. You may still be attending school, university or studying online. Socially we interact with people in different ways. Understanding these triggers and what we can do instead will be very important.

At the end of this topic, you will have a questionaire to fill in answering each of these questions. Feel free to share these with people on our Facebook page. Who knows you may be an inspiration to other people working on stopping too.

My Story

Remember how I said I would share with you how I stopped biting my nails? When I look back now, it just seemed so simple and I have never looked back.

I was always so embarrassed being a nail biter. I can always remember going to Mass with the family and coming back from Comunion with my hands folded in as I hated my nails. I would look at other people’s hands held together so angelically with their beautiful nails showing. I tried everything from the yukky tasting lotion and even that didn’t stop me. In fact I become quiet accustomed to the taste so that it didn’t bother me anymore. People would nag me of all the dangers of biting my nails and yet that didn’t stop me either.

Then one day, I think it may have been my 15th birthday, my sister gave me a beautiful Nail Beauty Kit with all the instructions on how to use it and how to strengthen the nails. It had everything I needed and this was a number of years ago. Of course this would not have worked if I wasn’t ready to make that change. So the emphasis on success is always the real WANT to stop biting your nails. Since you are reading or watching this, then I feel confident this is you.

Over the years I have always been interested in information that would help my nails grow stronger and healthier. As mentioned earlier Biotin was mentioned to me years ago and besides eathing food that provides Biotin I also take a supplement. Since it is water soluble I take it every day.

Biotin can help strengthen hair and nails and also helps the body’s nervous system to function properly. It can be found in foods like sardines, cooked eggs, and legumes, or you can take a B vitamin or supplement.

Three Potentially Harmful Chemicals In Nail Polish

It is important to avoid the use of any nail polish, gel or nail enamel on your nails until they are at a satisfactory length and strength. Then only use toxic free polish. Here is a list of the nasties that can be found in nail polish and also nail polish remover. This will assist you with understanding what makes up the list of these toxic chemicals.

Toluene is a solvent and is also used in paint thinners, rubber, adhesives and laquers plus car exhaust and cigarette smoke. It is also linked to Cancer and birth defects.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that use of nail polish or nail polish remover containing toluene may result in the chemical passing through your skin and into your bloodstream.

Debutyl Phthalate (DBP) this is used as a solvent for the dyes. Researchers confirmed that DBP is absorbed through the skin in a 2007 study. In addition to being linked to developmental problems, it’s also believed to be a hormone disruptor, to impair fertility, and to be toxic to aquatic organisms.

After measuring phthalate metabolites in the urine of over 2,600 participants, CDC researchers found that they are widespread in the general population. Women had higher levels than men for those phthalates “used in soaps, body washes, shampoos, cosmetics, and similar personal care products.”

Formaldehyde is a colourless gas found in nail hardeners. The CDC notes that breathing formaldehyde can cause sore throat, cough, scratchy eyes, and nosebleeds.

There are many more toxins in nail polish so check out this post.
